Abstract : Strategies of industrial ecology and environmental management for a fast-growing urban development zone are studied in this paper by taking the Shanghai Free Trade Zone (FTZ) of China as an example. On the basis of Environmental Impact Assessment of the FTZ, five strategies of industrial ecology and environmental planning and management are put forward to promote sustainable development: (1)Ecological zoning; (2) Pollution control and design of green space system; (3) Build up of the target system of ecological construction; (4)Ecological planning and (5)GIS (Geographic Information System) database design for eco-industrial park. Some suggestions on industrial structure and environmental management strategies are also provided.
